Little Red Improve to 2-0

The Ithaca Varsity Girls Swim and Dive team traveled to Vestal High School on Tuesday.  The Little Red came away with a dominating 117-66 win.  The Little Red won 11 of 12 events and Senior Annika Browning qualified for the State Championship meet and set a pool record in the 500 free (5:11.63) by over 3 seconds.  The record had stood for 28 years.

Varsity Girls Start Season with Win

The Girls Aquanauts opened the season with a 112-74 win over the Maine-Endwell Spartans.

After a tough loss in the 200 Medley Relay, the Little Red went on to win 9 of the total 12 events.  Annika Browning was a dual winner in the 200 and 500 Freestyle events.  Delia Ablard also was a double winner in the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke.  Micaela Moravek (50 free), Indie Stratton (100 free), and Jordan Lu (1 M Diving) also added wins for the Little Red.   The team of Kristen Reid, Annika Browning, Micaela Moravek and Indie Stratton won both the 200 Free Relay and the 400 Free Relay.

The Little Red go on the road next week competing at Vestal Sept 13th at 5:30pm and at Binghamton Sept 16th at 5:30pm.

Girls Aquanauts look ahead to InterSquad meet

The Annual Red/Gold InterSquad meet will be held on Saturday Sept. 3rd at the IHS pool.  This will be the team’s first chance to see where they stand after the pre-season training period.  The Girls Swimming and Diving Team have many returning upper classmen and are joined by many promising rookie teammates.  The outlook for this season is promising.

Browning and Miller honored.

Annika Browning has been named the Outstanding Female Swimmer by ESPN 1160 Radio for the 2015 Varsity Season.

Kevin Miller has been given the same honor for Boys Swimming.

Annika and Kevin will be receiving their awards on June 12th at the Night of Champions Award Ceremony.

In order to be considered for the award, Award recipients were determined by ESPN Ithaca’s Selection Committee and area Athletic Directors, taking into account each athlete’s overall performance in their sport. Each recipient maintained a minimum grade average of 85 with no disciplinary issues.

Their Coach, Mike Blakely-Armitage, is also being honored as the Outstanding Boys Swimming and Diving Coach for the 2015-2016 school year.

Post Season Awards Pile up

At the 2016 Senior Awards, The Little Red Swimmers received both athletic and academic awards.

Seraphina Buckholtz was presented with the Ruth E. Polson Academic Achievement Award.  This award honors graduating seniors with outstanding academic records and who will be furthering their education in college or other post-secondary programs.

Seraphina also won the PTA Senior English Award, for her high achievement in the English curriculum.

Seraphina capped off the night by winning the Spanish AP award for her outstanding performance in that curriculum.

Teng-Ru Fang won the Terry Habecker award, given to athletes who display competitive fire, team spirt, leadership and ethical play typified by Coach Habecker, who coached Soccer, Track and Volleyball at IHS for over 3 decades.

Kevin Miller is the recipient of the Joseph Tatascore memorial scholarship.  The award recognizes Joseph Tatascore, the former Athletic Director, and a student who has been involved in athletics, has a high scholastic average, and who plans to attend college.

Little Red Swimmers Earn Academic All-America Honors

The following Seniors have achieved and are recognized as Academic All-Americans: Seraphina Buckholtz, Teng-Ru Fang, Kevin Miller, Emily Rubin, Francis Schickel.

These Student/Athletes have worked hard in the classroom by achieving a 3.75 Grade Point Average over 7 semesters, while balancing the rigor of Swim training.

Little Red Keep the Bar High

2016 states

The Little Red Boys Swim Team are a significant presence in New York State High School Swimming. As a team they finished 2nd in the Public School Championship only 22 points behind Half Hollow Hills from Section 11.  This was their best finish in the Public School standings under coach Mike Blakely-Armitage’s leadership.

The Little Red brought 8 athletes: Teng-Ru Fang, Tim Hector, Jamie Lovette, Robert Mangan, Andrew Mikhailichenko, Kevin Miller and Evan Stevens.

The Little Red 200 Medley Relay team of Tim Hector, Andrew Mikhailichenko, Francis Schickel and Robert Mangan finished 4th.

Jamie Lovette finished 5th in the 200 Freestyle and his lanemate, Kevin Miller was the 200 Free Public School champion and achieved and All-American time standard!

Andrew Mikhailichenko was the lone entrant in the 200 Individual Medley and finished 28th in the Public School Championship.

Robert Mangan showed depth in the 50 free by placing 23rd while his sprinter teammate Francis Schickel placed 9th.

Francis Schickel placed 29th in the 100 yard butterfly in an unusually fast field.

Robert Mangan showed his sprint power by placing 13th in the 100 freestyle.

In the 500 freestyle, the Little Red showed their strength again, Jamie Lovette placed 9th and teammate Kevin Miller was the Public school champion, again achieving an All-American time.

In the 100 Breaststroke, Andrew Mikhailichenko, held on to 8th place, and was the fastest Section IV breaststroker at the meet.

The last event of the meet was the 400 Free Relay.  The Little Red team of Kevin Miller, Jamie Lovette, Robert Mangan and Francis Schickel had a historic swim.  They set a new Varsity Record, a new STAC and Section IV record and were .05 from breaking the State Record.  They also achieved an All-American time standard.

In order to be an All-American you must be one of the top 100 times in the U.S.A.

The Little Red have completed their 7th undefeated season in a row, and have notched 3 more All-Americans totaling 15 in that time.    Thank you for your support during the season and please recognize these truly extraordinary athletes for their achievements and dedication to upholding a culture of excellence in our school community.
